Purpose: To share the skill of coaching with individuals to:

  • Introduce a new way of journeying with, leading, and being in human relationships.
  • Offer opportunities to practice using these basic skills in informal settings.

Description: This training has been created to equip individuals with the primary skills used by executive and life coaches: intense listening and high-powered question creation. Combining these two skills produces conversations that result in much richer output and more profound understanding between the participants. Once familiar with these coaching skills, they can be applied to any conversation, whether a response to a short text blast, a dinner table conversation, or an office chat. Your conversations with friends, family, co-workers, and team members will take on the characteristic of being supportive, non-aggressive, and non-judgmental, which ultimately builds solid and trusted relationships.

Expected outcomes:

  • Listening for what the conversation partner wants (their goal)
  • Understanding the limitations of closed-ended questions
  • Ability to create questions that return a rich answer set
  • Understanding the differences between coaching, mentoring, counseling, and consulting
  • The ability to use a model “flow” of a conversation for better results
  • Ability to help conversation partners identify actions they can take and how to measure success

The format of this training includes lectures, audio and video presentations, in-class exercises, and practice sessions where participants will try out some coaching skills in small group settings.

This course consists of three (3) two-hour sessions AND approximately two (2) hours of pre-class readings and homework across the three (3) weeks of training.
