Many of us are familiar with the phrase "separation of church and state" -- but what does that mean for us as we serve the church and the world? The ELCA Social Statement Task Force on Civic Life and Faith has released a draft social statement to speak to questions just like this. They are seeking voices from across the ELCA to give feedback on the draft.
Join us as we hear from Heather Dean, an ELCA staff member who works with the social statement task force, to learn about the social statement process. Then in small groups, we reflected on pieces of the draft statement, including topics like Christian nationalism, money in politics, the public voice of rostered ministers, and hyper-partisanship.
Your feedback will be shared with the task force as they work to strengthen the social statement ahead of the 2025 Churchwide Assembly.
Heather Dean has served on the Theological Discernment Team in the Office of the Presiding Bishop since 2012. Civic Life and Faith is the second social statement process she has worked on. She is also an ELCA Coach who has recently finished the Segment 2 Discipleship Specialty Coaching training with a wonderful cohort. Heather is passionate about designing resources, workshops, and experiences that connect people with each other, themselves, and the divine.
